Paul Gerhardt (1600’s)translated into German the Latin text of Bernard of Clairvaux (1153) and Johann S. Bach (1729)composed several harmony arrangements of this popular Passion Hymn. The melody derives from a popular love song: “Mein G’muth ist Mir Verwirret” (My Mind is Confused)by the Renaissance composer, Hans Leo Hassler.
