American folklorist and singer, John Jacob Niles, collected a song fragment on July 16, 1933 in Murphy, NC, from a girl, Annie Morgan, who sang it 7 times for a quarter. He used it to assemble a song first performed on December 19, 1933 at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC. It was published in “Songs of the Hill Folk” in 1934 by G. Schirmer.
