“Ruthenian” refers to an ethnic minority living in the vicinity of Western Ukraine. Bela Bartok collected, recorded, and transcribed thousands of folk songs in his travels throughout Eastern Europe. He arranged this piece as a duet for two violins in his set of “44 Duets” from 1933.
